STEALTH CONVERSIONS REAR LOWERING BLOCKS

Stealth Conversions rear suspension lowering kit uses lowering blocks made of solid (billet) aluminum.

The lowering blocks are unique in that the lower hole is 9/16" and the upper hole is threaded to accept a 3/8" socket head cap screw, which has a 9/16" diameter head. This allows bolting the axle alignment shims on top of the lowering block, as well as bolting 1/2" thick lowering blocks to the 1", 2", and 3" lowering blocks in order to make 1-1/2", 2-1/2", and 3-1/2" lowering blocks.

The Stealth Conversions lowering blocks are available in 1/2", 1", 2", and 3" thickness. The solid aluminum lowering blocks cost a lot more than most other lowering blocks because of the high cost of solid aluminum, and the additional machining required to tap the hole, but they will not fail, and are more versatile than extruded or cast lowering blocks because they can be used with axle alignment shims, and the amount of lowering can be adjusted in 1/2" increments by bolting the 1/2" block to a 1", 2" or 3" lowering block.

If you only want to lower the rear 1/2", you can install the 1/2" lowering block directly to the leaf spring in the same manner that the pinion alignment shim is bolted to the leaf spring.

Generally, lowering blocks taller than 3" (with 15" rims) are not recommended because this positions the lower spring bracket below the rim line (also called the "scrub line") and this is illegal in many states, because if the tire loses air, the bracket will drag on the ground, causing the vehicle to lose control.

The Stealth Conversion Lowering Blocks can be used on top of the axle set-back plates

S10 Truck, Pinion Alignment Shims and lowering blocks

Pinion Alignment Shims and Lowering Blocks

The Stealth Conversions lowering blocks are unique in that the top of the block is threaded. This allows the pinion alignment shim to attach to the lowering block, while leaving the full height of the cap screw for the rear-axle locating hole.

Broken Shims

Lowering Blocks and Pinion Alignment Shims

Several companies make pinion alignment shims. Most are made of cast aluminum or zinc, and are too narrow to cover the entire width of the 2-1/2" wide leaf spring used on the S-10.

When the 2" wide aluminum shims are installed on the cast or extruded lowering blocks, the shims (or the lowering blocks) will fail because only a small portion is supported by the hollow lowering blocks.

When the shims (or lowering blocks) break, the U-bolts can appear to loosen.

Stealth Conversions makes 2° and 3° alignment shims which are 2-1/2" wide, which will not fail in service. The center hole is about 3/8" and spot-faced so that the bolt holding the spring pack together can be installed on top of the tapered shim to allow the bolt head to fit into the alignment hole on the rear axle plate. The shims are zinc plated to prevent rust.

When the shims are used on the cast or extruded lowering blocks, the center hole of the shim must be drilled out to 9/16", however, some of the cast and extruded lowering blocks do not have a pin height that is tall enough to protrude through the pinion alignment shim.

S10 u-bolts, heavy duty u-bolts

The stock S-10 U-bolts are metric, but they are about 9/16".  The U-bolts in our lowering kits use 9/16" threads and the U-bolts have the correct dimensions for use with the S-10 axle, which is 2.75" diameter.

Most of the aftermarket lowering kits use U-bolts which are designed for a 3" axle. Also, most  aftermarket U-bolts use 1/2" threads, which are weaker than the stock S-10 U-bolts, and they often strip with repeated use.

Torque these u-bolts to 85 lb-ft.
